Our Take On The Small and Midsize Luxury Cars Sales Numbers
Entry level luxury cars struggled in July 2018, ending the month down 12.6% compared with July 2017.
Audi and Volvo fared well – both brands on the rise in this segment – as the rest fell behind compared with July 2017’s sales.
The big story in the midsize luxury car segment is the seemingly triumphant arrival of the Tesla Model 3. With production of the Model 3 having been aggressively ramped up of late, the Model 3 is outselling every other model in this market by a clear margin.
Even by GCBC’s conservative estimates, Model 3 sales in July outsold combined sales of the Mercedes-Benz C-, CLA-, E and CLS-Classes, combined sales of the BMW 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-Series and i3, and combined sales of the Audi A3, A4, A5, A6 and A7.
Whether this situation will continue or not remains to be seen, but for July 2018 at least the Model 3 has a 24% chunk of market share.
