Our Take On The Minivan Sales Numbers

Strong sales of Minivans in April did not continue into May 2018.

The top of the chart Dodge Grand Caravan suffered most of all, with its sales cut by almost 37% year-on-year last month. With this being a particularly top-heavy segment, the effect on the total across the six nameplates still in the minivan game was profound; total sales fell by 20.2% year-on-year for the month.

The Grand Caravan’s younger in-house competition, the Chrysler Pacifica, saw its sales drop by just a single unit compared with May 2017, while year-to-date it remains ahead by 28% compared with 2017. The Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna are also riding a tide of growth in Canada across the first five months of the year.

But the Grand Caravan remains such an important player in this sector that overall minivan sales in Canada still trail 2017’s totals by 2.86% despite the strong upticks for those three nameplates.
