Our Take On The Midsize SUV Sales Numbers
April 2018 saw the midsize SUV market in Canada grow by 0.8% year-on-year – not much, but consider there was a shorter selling month this April than last and breaking even begins to seem like a boon for the segment.
Midsize SUVs were still outpaced by the growth of all SUV sales in Canada though, and were it not for the Jeep Wrangler’s increases the segment’s total would not have broken even for the month; remove the off-roader from the chart and the remaining nameplates’ total sales declined by 4.9%.
So the Wrangler’s decline masks a broader drop in sales here. It’s not all bad news though – the Kia Sorento had its best month in the Canadian market ever as a facelifted, 2019 model-year version arrived in dealerships at the end of the month. Ford Explorer increases of 10% year-on-year and year-to-date hint at steady progress towards another great year, and the Chevrolet Traverse outpaced the broader segment significantly once again with a 35.2% year-on-year increase in sales, showing the new model has really hit its stride since being introduced in the autumn.
