The year-on-year drop in Canadian passenger car sales increased from February’s 2.29% to 9.4% for March.
Last month’s sales figures also represent a sharp acceleration in the rate of decline from March 2016 to March 2017, and the drop triples the size of the gap in year-to-date performance carried over from February.
The Honda Civic’s shortfall in March alone accounts for over 2,000 of the 6,000 or so sales the passenger car market fell behind by in quarter 1 of the year. Other voluminous nameplates that saw steep drops in sales last month include the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, Chevrolet Cruze and Mazda 3.
The Volkswagen Golf, the lowest-selling passenger car to sell above 2,000 units last month went against the grain with a 21.7% year-on-year increase, and so far this year has added almost 1,500 sales to the total.
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4 both saw sales fall considerably compared with this month last year, while the BMW 3-Series’ sales grew by 15.9% year-on-year. None of the trio emerged from Q1 with a growth in sales overall for the period.
