Our Take On The Large SUV Sales Numbers

A 1.8% year-on-year increase in large SUV sales may seem modest, but that comes amidst several factors that would normally lead to a backslide.

Fuel prices are on the up, and few vehicles are less frugal per mile than a full size sports utility vehicle.

Ford Expedition sales fell by 36.2% year-on-year, when this time last year its sales made up more than a third of all large SUV sales for the month.

But every other nameplate in this segment posted growth last month, most by significant amounts. As well as this, the Expedition’s drops, while steep in a recent context, leave it still much higher than its average sales for the time of year.

The drops did give others a chance at a bigger slice of the pie; General Motors market share across its three nameplates hit 61% for April, while Toyota and Nissan take 7% each.
