Our Take On The Large Cars Sales Numbers
The drop in sales of large cars in America increased almost twofold on that seen between 2015 and 2016. Last year, total sales fell by 8%. From 2016 to 2017, the gap was 15.6%.
Of course, the removal of the Hyundai Genesis nameplate from the chart accounts for some of that drop – nowadays, Genesis is a brand in its own right, with Hyundai taking it down the distinguished, premium pathway that Nissan did with Infiniti and Toyota did with Lexus before it.
But only three nameplates managed to go green year-to-date for 2017; the Nissan Maxima, the Kia Cadenza and the Chevrolet SS.
The second-generation Cadenza was released in late 2016, meaning its managed to grow its figures on that year, doubling sales year-on-year for December and more than trebling them for November. But its 7,249 sales for the year account for less than two per cent of the large car market.
Chevrolet announced in 2017 that production of the SS would cease by the end of the year – meaning its sales growth can be attributed to enthusiasts keen for a bargain picking up the run-out deals on this rear-wheel-drive, bang-for-your-buck sedan.
So the flecks of green in the chart below aren’t exactly a huge influence on the year’s final total (Maxima excluded.) So what happened?
Despite a glimmer of hope in the form of a few months of year-on-year growth in 2017, the Chevrolet Impala ended the year over a fifth down on 2016’s sales.
It’s not the only one to suffer to this extent – the Buick LaCrosse was down 26.9% on 2016’s year-to-date, while the Toyota Avalon and Hyundai Azera were both down by over 30%.
It’s no secret that sedan sales are slipping, absorbed by the ever-growing SUV and crossover segment. These manufacturers’ saloon offerings are in competition for consumers’ wallets with their own SUV offering. And the SUVs are winning.
