Canadian auto sales jumped a further 6.2%, making it five years in a row of record-breaking Januaries.
Given that 2017 ended with a record total, it’s easy to get excited about prospects for 2018, but with eleven months of vehicle sales yet to unfold ahead of us, a lot could happen to change those good fortunes.
Ford F-Series tops the table as usual, though with a conspicuous 16.4% drop compared with last January. The Ram pickup follows suit, with sales falling at roughly the same rate, and bringing its volumes closer to that of the Honda Civic, which begins 2018 with a sturdy 34.1% growth in its sales to last year.
It is joined by the Honda CR-V in fifth, with the new Jeep Wrangler proving exceedingly popular in sixth. Sales of the Wrangler almost trebling on where they were a year ago.
The Dodge Grand Caravan marks another strong showing for FCA, with sales of that up 37.4% to be the top minivan in the countdown.
The Grand Caravan’s resurgence means minivans make up 5.3% of auto sales in Canada for January 2018. SUV sales account for the biggest chunk – 46% overall – while passenger car sales make up 27.2% of the Canadian auto market so far this year. Pickups account for 18.8% and Commercial vans just 2.7%.
