Clearly the SUV/crossover sector has also been helped by the addition of all-new, niche-filling nameplates which weren’t on sale at this time a year ago. The Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Jeep Renegade, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Volvo XC90, and Fiat 500X added 6640 sales to the ledger, or 4% of sales.
A number of premium nameplates are expanding their market share, as well. The Mercedes-Benz GLE, the M-Class’s successor, is the top-selling luxury utility so far in 2016 thanks to a 47% year-over-year increase. Key rivals from BMW and Audi, the X5 and new Q7, are also growing far faster than the overall SUV/crossover sector’s rate of expansion.
