Canada’s favourite small SUV was Canada’s overall favourite utility vehicle in March 2013. That’s normal. But instead of that small SUV being Ford’s Escape, it was Toyota’s new RAV4.
RAV4 sales nearly doubled in March. Sales of last March’s leader, the Honda CR-V, tumbled 32%.

Mazda Canada reported its best CX-5 sales month so far, and then sent GCBC a top-end CX-5 to drive for a week. Subaru sold 1003 Foresters, a record high for that nameplate, too. Nearly half of the Chevrolet Trax sales that have occurred in the newest Chevy’s first four months on sale occurred in March.
Mini’s Paceman went on sale, but despite requests, Mini Canada is so far only releasing Paceman data under the Cooper banner, along with many other Minis. Countryman sales improved on a year-over-year basis but tumbled 25% from February, when the market for new vehicles was much smaller.
For the sixth time in the last seven months, Kia Canada reported a decline in Sportage sales. An updated 2014 Sorento isn’t going to make it any easier for the smaller Kia crossover. Same goes for the Hyundai Tucson and its big brother, the more appealing Santa Fe. Volkswagen Tiguan sales fell for the fourth consecutive month in March.

GCBC isn’t here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you’ll see the Santa Fe and Sorento listed with midsize SUVs – they’re stuck in between in terms of size – as well as vehicles like the Wrangler and Xterra listed both here and there. The Buick Encore and Subaru XV Crosstrek and their gang are also listed with mainstream cars, because they’re sitting on a fence between SUVs and traditional passenger cars.
