Mercedes-Benz’s Canadian stores took full advantage of an opportunity presented by BMW’s slight 3-Series inventory interruption in February. As BMW dealers waited for customer cars to arrive in proper quantities, Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class out-sold the 3-Series by more than 200 units. The C-Class has become increasingly popular as the outgoing 3-Series aged; whether it can maintain that popularity as the new 3-Series comes on strong is likely down to how heavily Mercedes-Benz will market and incentivize the C-Class. Regardless, the C-Class out-sold the Acura TSX, Cadillac CTS, Lexus CT, Lexus HS, Lexus IS, and Volvo S60 combined in February 2012.

Hyundai sold seven Equus sedans in February. While the Equus is sized like an S-Class, its price makes sales comparisons with the E-Class more palatable. Equus sales were down compared with the same period a year ago. Genesis sales were up significantly for Hyundai, however, although the real Genesis volume comes from the much less costly Genesis Coupe. Perhaps this will be all the more true if the slightly less expensive 2012 Hyundai Azera cannibalizes Genesis sales in the coming months. The new Azera is currently playing a prominent role on Hyundai USA’s website but has yet to make an appearance on the Canadian site.
Another car that doesn’t directly compare with the E-Class would be the value-priced Acura TL. TL sales shot up 64% in February and are up 91% so far this year as the core Acura passenger car has accounted for a third of all Acura Canada sales in early 2012.
