More than half of Canada’s 20 best-selling cars in July 2011 didn’t sell as well as they did in July 2010. The third-ranked Honda Civic slid 23.3%; the Mazda 3 was down 22.1%; the Cobalt-replacing Chevrolet Cruze fell 11% in comparison to the Cobalt’s performance from last year; and the 2012 Ford Focus was off 13%. The overall market, you may recall, was down 4.9%.
For the third consecutive month the Hyundai Elantra was the best-selling car in Canada. Though it trails the Honda Civic year-to-date, its seven-month total is now just 923 sales behind the Honda. Elantra sales rose 47.9% in July. 3437 Elantra sedans were sold last month along with 1331 Elantra Touring wagons. Those are 51.5% and 39.5% improvements, respectively, leading to best-ever Julys for both Elantra bodystyles.
Unusually, there are no luxury brands represented in Canada’s best-selling cars table in this edition. BMW 3-Series sales fell 16.4% to 943 in July 2011. The 3-Series would have fell into 22nd spot had our group been larger Just missing from the Top 20 was the Mazda 2, by no means a luxury car, but a fun-to-drive hatch that’s surely stealing some of the Mazda 3’s customers. Mazda sold 4812 2s and 3s in July 2010 and 4577 last month, not a dreadful loss given that the market tumbled just as far. Sales of the 21st-ranked Mazda 2 were up 493%.
