Midsize luxury car sales in Canada had an extremely rough December and a rough 2019. The segment was down for both, but it was the December sales that really pushed the overall numbers down.
In December, midsize luxury car sales dropped by over 2,100 sales. When you look at the year as a whole, the segment was down more than 3,200 sales. With those numbers in mind, it’s clear that the segment was seriously impacted for the year by the single month of December.
The Tesla Model 3 led the way, but its sales in December were down by 80 percent for the month. The model was down by 10 percent for the year overall. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class was in second place. It too saw sales drop. However, the declines were not as steep as the Model 3’s. The Lexus ES came in third and it saw sales drop in the month of December and rise for the year as a whole. It was one of the few models that saw sales rise for the year.
We’d expect the midsize luxury car segment to continue to struggle in the coming months of 2020. The segment has trended down in recent years, and we expect that to continue.
Data will trickle in throughout the day with the numbers being finalized by EOD. GCBC is also happy to announce that we will be adding quarterly sales reports and comparisons in addition to monthly sales comparisons beginning this quarter. We will also be adding monthly sales tables and charts to the mix as well.
Note: FCA US LLC will end its practice of reporting U.S. and Canada sales on a monthly basis following June results. FCA US and FCA Canada will report monthly sales for May and June. The first quarterly report will occur on October 1, 2019, covering the months of July, August, and September.
