Our Take On The Midsize Cars Sales Numbers

Midsize car sales saw a drop both for the month of December and for the year when compared with last year. It would seem the shift to crossovers and SUVs continues to cause a decline in car sales.

The leader of the pack in terms of sales volume was the Toyota Camry. With that said, it saw a drop of 32.9 percent for the month of December when compared to last year and a drop of 11.3 percent for the year as a whole.

The Honda Accord was in second for volume. While it didn’t have a fantastic year with a drop of 9.8 percent, it did see an increase in sales in December when compared to last year of 29.4 percent.

A car that showed strong sales for 2018 and for the month of December was the Kia Stinger. It will be interesting to see if it can keep up strong sales as 2019 goes on.

Hybrid and electric sales were down overall in the segment. However, the Hyundai Ioniq posted good percentage increases with a boost of 40.4 percent in December and 34.6 percent for the year as a whole.

The Nissan Leaf’s new model is also selling well with significant increases for the model both for the month and for the year. The new Leaf will likely help Nissan’s sales in 2019.
