Our Take On The Small SUVs Sales Numbers

After struggling in April, the Nissan Rogue posted a resurgent 18.1% year-on-year growth in sales to go top of the small and crossover SUV sales chart for the USA in May 2018.

That spike in sales put it ahead of rivals from Toyota, Honda and Ford, as well as the strong-selling Jeep Cherokee and Compass.

Small SUVs and crossovers is a key growth area in the US market; bolstered at the moment by a strong job market and spreading consumer confidence, interest rate hikes have so far had little effect on the upturn in sales in this area.

An extra day of sales over last May no doubt played a part in the increases seen for many of the below nameplates last month, but many of the increases were far in advance of what a single bonus day could achieve.

Highest growth was seen for the Volkswagen Tiguan, which almost quadrupled its sales on the previous May for its best May to date. Others experiencing steep upward curves include the aforementioned Compass, Toyota’s C-HR and Subaru’s enduringly popular XV Crosstrek, in the brand’s best-ever May.

Less fruitful in May for Subaru was the Forester, though a replacement is due later in the year which may be hampering sales somewhat, along with the sheer strength of the Crosstrek product.
