Our Take On The Midsize SUVs Sales Numbers

The Jeep Wrangler continues its domination of the midsize SUV segment, though its growth compared with a year ago is not quite as steep as in the two months prior to May.

A new Ford Explorer is not due until 2020, but even with a raft of updates having arrived for the 2018 model year the current version, second for the month of May in this market, saw sales dip by 11.5% year-on-year last month.

The Mazda CX-9 posted another moth of encouraging growth in May, with a 26.6% increase in its sales for the month. The CX-9 remains a niche player, but the lithe antidote to two-box SUVs in this market place is widely regarded by many as one of the most underrated players in the field.

The unconventional approach of Mazda’s SUV lineup seems to have finally hit its stride in the US. In May, sales of its CX-badged SUVS rose 20.6% year-on-year.
