Our Take On The Sporty Cars Sales Numbers

As US sales of SUVs continue to increase, it seems that American consumers’ fondness for more traditional sporty coupes is waning.

Even the Ford Mustang, the only passenger car seemingly to be saved from a cull of the blue oval’s passenger car lineup by 2020, had a lacklustre month of sales, with eight out of the last twelve months seeing year-on-year drops for the pony car.

It was a different story for the Ford GT supercar, of which ten examples reached owners in April. At the low-volume end of the market, sporty cars are still finding their audience. Lexus’ new LC coupe, the ageing Audi R8 and the futuristic dual-powertrain BMW i8 all saw decent increases in volume year-on-year during last month, as did the Mercedes-AMG GT.

But further down the pecking order in terms of capabilities (and price) the duo of affordable RWD sports cars the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 are continuing to decline, the Mazda MX-5 Miata, similarly, has seen dwindling interest of late.

In some cases an ageing lineup may be to blame; Jaguar’s F-Type has been with us now for five years, and now has to face up to competition from a more recently renewed and more frugal Porsche 718 lineup.

But Jaguar has its SUVs now, as do the majority of other manufacturers in the sporty car sector, with quicker and easier gains to be made in high-riding, high-volume vehicles that are surely seeming like a much a safer bet in terms of consumer reception.
