Our Take On The Small Cars Sales Numbers

Rapidly-selling new additions combined by the popularity of some established names have helped the tall hatchback market leap forward again after the conclusion of April’s sales.

Year-on-year, tall hatch sales were up almost 30% for the month, and compared with the first four months of 2017 sales of such vehicles have increased 42.2%.

Their likeness to SUVs but without the price tag of full-fat sports utility vehicles is likely part of their popularity at the moment. With fuel prices on the rise, we may see sales in this part of the market increasing in the coming months, as those already factoring price into their purchasing decision seek to move away from larger, more gas-guzzling SUVs but still want some of that rugged appeal.

One of the most popular tall hatches is the Subaru Crosstrek, which has sold 66% more units this year than last already, enough for it to overtake the volume of the Impreza hatchback with which it shares a lot.

With Ford looking to eliminate most of its passenger car offering from the North American market by 2020, one nameplate that may not quite see the chopping block is the Focus. However, it’s expected to live on only as an SUV-leaning Focus ‘cross’-type model, seeking to emulate the Crosstrek’s successful transition from hatch to almost SUV territory.
