Our Take On The Small and Midsize Luxury Cars Sales Numbers

Last month saw sales of the Alfa Romeo Giulia cross the 1000-sales threshold for only the second month since its introduction to the US market for the 2017 model year.

In doing so, the Giulia surpassed the sales performance of more established nameplates like the 60-series Volvos and the Infiniti Q60. Sales of the Alfa are up 163% year-to-date.

While the top-three for this month remain decidedly German, and with rivals from Japanese and British manufacturers vying for consumers’ cash, the Italian Alfa does seem to be providing an attractive alternative to the norm for the entry-level luxury buyer that wants something sleeker than an SUV.

In the midsize premium range, the E-Class Mercedes-Benz holds on to its lead quite comfortably, but what is interesting is the battle for second place in the year-to-date column.

The BMW 5-Series and Lexus ES stayed close near the top of the chart after April’s figures were reported, with the 5-Series year-to-date total having risen considerably following an injection of sales in March.

ES got the edge on it with the month-end total for April, but with still eight months to go second place in the midsize luxury sales chart is still to play for.
