Our Take On The Passenger Car Numbers

April 2018 saw declines in passenger car sales in Canada hit 9.8%, a modest increase in the rate seen in March.

Dropping sales mean that for the month the slice of the market taken up by passenger cars fell from 33.1% in April 2017 to 28% last month.

Consumers’ lack of interest in traditional three-box sedans is leading automakers to take action. Ford announced last month that it will phase out all its passenger cars in North America, save for the Mustang and a crossover-styled Focus hatchback. Other automakers are adapting a similar, SUV-focused strategy moving forward to capitalise on the higher price tags these vehicles typically command.

Despite the company seemingly having signed the sedan’s death warrant, several Fords below actually posted increases in April; Focus, Fusion and Taurus sales all increased year-on-year, as did the sporty Mustang that won’t face the chopping block.

The Chrysler 300’s sales doubled year-on-year for April after a severe dip in March. The Audi A5 continues to impress with a three-figure growth figure for the month. The Chevrolet Volt, Kia Rio and Nissan Altima also managed sturdy year-on-year increases.

There is some life in the passenger car market yet.
