Our Take On The Midsize Car Sales Numbers

Sales of midsize cars in Canada were down 19% year-on-year in February, bringing the year-to-date difference in sales to last year’s performance for the segment to almost 25%.

A portion of the drop can be attributed to the now-defunct Chrysler 200, as Chrysler were clearing stock this time last year, though between them the other nameplates in the midsize car segment have dropped over 600 sales compared with last February.

There is some stability at the top of the table, with the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord seeing marginal drops in sales, and keeping a nose ahead of last year’s sales performance year-to-date.

The Nissan Altima, Canada’s third best-selling mid size car in February 2018, saw sales drop by more than a quarter on 2017’s performance in the second month, with the Qashqai crossover likely catching the eye of some of those buyers that would previously have considered the Altima.

The Volkswagen Passat both made good headway in February, with the Passat selling 90% more units than last February, and the Mazda contributing nearly 50% more sales to the total than last February.

Sales of midsize hybrid cars are on the up too – February’s figures bring the market as a whole 41.2% better off year-to-date, with all models but the Ford C-Max posting year-on-year growth last month.

Ford announced earlier this month that its Michigan plant, where the C-Max and Focus have been built up to now, will be retooled to produce the incoming Ranger mid-sized pickup.
