Our Take On The Sporty Cars Sales Numbers

The muscle car segment echoes that of a year ago, with the Ford Mustang retaking the lead after a brief spell with the Camaro in front. The Mustang’s 8.5% growth helps the muscle car trio pull a 2.1% increase year-on-year out of the bag, despite falling sales for the other pair.

The Dodge Challenger, in third, will have to sell 4,044 units next month to ensure that it breaks even with last year’s year-to-date. It is currently the only muscle car in our countdown to be in the green on last year’s performance to date. The last time it sold less than that in the final month of the year was back in 2013, though it has seen sales drop in every month of the last quarter.

November was Jaguar Land Rover’s best-ever month of sales in the USA, and the automaker can be pleased with its performance in the Euro Sports Car segment; the F-Type outsold rivals from Porsche, Audi and Mercedes-Benz to go top of the charts here with a 39.8% increase year-on-year.

Its performance, coupled with strong increases from the Porsche Cayman and Alfa Romeo 4C, was not enough to stave off losses elsewhere in the segment, which is also suffering from the absence of the BMW Z4.

The Chevrolet Corvette bounced back in the Misc Sports Cars segment after an autumn slump.

Both it and the Subaru Impreza WRX / STI outdid the Audi A5 in November, despite the German coupe’s seventh consecutive month of three-figure sales growth.

Significant lifts from the Corvette and A5 helped head off drops elsewhere to carry the Misc Sport Cars segment to 7.2% growth in November.

Meanwhile, Premium Sports Cars was also buoyed by German talent, wit the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT helping the market to 25% growth year-on-year.
