Our Take On The Midsize Cars Sales Numbers

Despite a sharp increase in sales for the eleventh month of the year, the midsize segment-leading Toyota Camry looks very unlikely to break even overall for 2017.

In order to do that, the Camry would need to sell 44,868 vehicles in December.

It’s not alone – the Midsize segment is a sea of red this month, and goes into December 16% behind the same point last year in year-to-date.

The market for Hybrids and Electrics was up again in November, bringing the increase in sales of these to 14.8% year-to-date.

It is impressive that this market continues to flourish despite a slowdown for one of its biggest players – the Nissan Leaf – as it transitions to a new model. Leaf sales were down 88% year-on-year for the month, and yet the market as a whole was up 10% y-o-y.

Of course, these figures remain a drop in the ocean in the broad view of the US auto market; 17,672 Midsize EVs and Hybrids amongst 1,399,070 vehicles sold in America for the month. Sales of these vehicles may also have a tough time going into 2018, with the possibility that the Federal Tax Credit on vehicles with electric powertrains could be removed turn of the year weighing on EV forecasts.

More manufacturers are weighing in on the electric vehicle market however, with BMW reporting this month that sales of its EV offering (detailed in luxury car countdowns) being up 27.8% year-to-date at 18,416 through November, it’s unlikely that this segment will be on the wane anytime soon.
