Our Take On The Sporty Cars Sales Numbers

The Chevrolet Camaro outsold the Ford Mustang for the second consecutive month in October, mirroring a period ahead of the Mustang from last year. No muscle car posted year-on-year growth for October despite an extra selling day, and only the Dodge Challenger is now ahead year-to-date, with the Mustang in particular faring much worse than 2016’s overall performance.

In the Euro Sports Cars chart, a 36.2% fall in sales across the segment is mostly down to falling demand for the Jaguar F-Type, Audi TT and the BMW Z4, sales of which began to tail off back in the spring time. A new Z4 is due in 2019. The F-Type may receive a final shot in the arm for 2017 with talk of dealer incentives to shift remaining inventory throughout the last 2 months of the year.

The Audi A5 remains the golden growth child in the Misc Sports Cars sales chart. Without it this segment would be well behind on last year’s year-to-date figure. As it stands, for October the A5 was the second best-selling misc sporty car in America, slotting between the Impreza WRX / STI and the Golf GTI in the sales chart, and fifth overall behind the three muscle cars in our countdown.

October was a very strong month for premium sports cars, with that segment posting over 30% growth. Large increases for the Porsche 911 helped a lot, as did 202.5% year-on-year growth for the Mercedes-AMG GT.

Lexus’ foray into the premium sports car market has also been well received by US sports car buyers; it sits in fourth in the premium chart.
