Large Car Sales In America - August 2017

The rift between last year's performance to date and this year's in the Large Car segment in the US has fallen from 31.13% to 'just' 15.2%. The majority of the cars in this segment are far behind 2016's performance to the end of August, with only the Kia Cadenza and the outgoing Chevrolet SS faring better in YTD terms.

The Cadenza has recovered valiantly from a more than 30% defecit on last year's sales in the first quarter of 2017 to now go almost 10% ahead following a mid-life update that brought an eight-speed automatic transmission to the Cadenza.

Things aren't so good for the related Hyundai Azera. With demand for large saloons having fallen dramatically in the US market, the outgoing Azera is now more than 30% behind 2016's performance to the end of summer, and looks set to round out 2017 as a fourth consecutive year of fallen sales.

Meanwhile the Chevrolet Impala had its best month of 2017 so far, trebling the number of units it shifted in July. It will take more than this shot-in-the-arm for the Impala to catch up on its 2016 figures; 2/3 of the way through the year it's still only sold 1/2 of the cars it would need to to equal last year's performance.

Source: Automakers * Hyundai USA, not GoodCarBadCar, chooses to combine sales figures for the Genesis sedan and Genesis Coupe, forcing us to include the Genesis with these volume-brand cars on pricing grounds before we even get to the "brand status" issue. GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
