Small Car Sales In America - April 2017

2017 Subaru Impreza hatch and sedan
U.S. sales of compact cars declined just 2% in April 2017, a modest downturn that doesn't reflect the degree to which the auto industry contracted.

April 2017 auto sales volume slid 5%. The car market as a whole was down 11%. But because of big year-over-year gains from the Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra, Subaru Impreza, and Volkswagen Golf, compact sales were only slightly south of level.

Subcompact cars, on the other hand, were down 28% in April 2017, a loss of nearly 13,000 sales for the core segment.

The Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio, both approaching a replacement phase, are partly to blame, but sales of the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, and Toyota Prius C likewise plunged.

* vehicle also displayed in another GCBC segment breakdown
GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why you'll see the Encore and XV Crosstrek are listed with small SUVs, too, and the Acura ILX shown with mainstream cars is also displayed with luxury cars... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
