America’s new vehicle market is shrinking, albeit modestly.

America’s passenger car market is shrinking, albeit not at a horrific or unanticipated rate.

But America’s full-size car market, the traditional large family sedans, are losing buyers left, right, and center. Sales of volume brand full-size sedans plunged 23% in April 2017 and are down by a fifth so far this year, with massive declines from departing models such as the Hyundai Azera and once high-volume nameplates such as the Chevrolet Impala.

For the Azera, spotting a 47% drop in April was hardly surprising. Hyundai is leaving the segment and essentially allowing remaining Azeras to wither on the vine.

For the Impala, likewise, a decline is not unexpected. U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Impala have declined in ten of the last twelve months. But the 61% drop in April 2017 drove Impala volume down to only 3213 sales. This is a car that, just two years ago, averaged nearly 10,000 sales per month.

* Hyundai USA, not GoodCarBadCar, chooses to combine sales figures for the Genesis sedan and Genesis Coupe, forcing us to include the Genesis with these volume-brand cars on pricing grounds before we even get to the “brand status” issue.
GCBC isn’t here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
