Despite modest slowdowns from the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue, plus big drops from a handful of Jeeps and the Volkswagen Tiguan, huge year-over-year improvements at General Motors, Honda, and Dodge produced 2500 additional sales for the segment in April. So far this year, mainstream brand compact utility vehicles account for nearly one out of every five new vehicle sales in Canada.

Subcompact crossovers and SUVs, meanwhile, tumbled 7% to 6300 units in April. The Honda HR-V is Canada's top-selling subcompact utility vehicle, and by a wide margin. General Motors, by way of two entries, is the next-best-selling builder of subcompact utilities.

The Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax combined for 4755 Canadian sales in the first one-third of 2017.

HR-V sales are up 56% to 4940 units so far this year.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why you'll see the Encore and XV Crosstrek are listed with small cars, too,  because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
