Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In America – March 2017

2015 BMW X3

In March 2017, for a second consecutive month, the best-selling subcompact luxury crossover in America was not the BMW X1 or Mercedes-Benz GLA but the GLA’s British-built Japanese offshoot, the Infiniti QX30.

QX30 sales totalled 2960 units, enough to form 15% of Infiniti USA sales, enough to narrowly pip the BMW X1 by 64 units and its donor car, the GLA, by a 73% margin.

But the QX30 was not America’s best-selling luxury SUV in March 2017. Neither was the BMW X3, the leader of the compact luxury class, which jumped 43% to 6395 units in March – and 33% to a class-leading 13,569 units in 2017 Q1.

The Lexus RX, as is almost always the case, led all premium utility vehicle sales in March 2017.

RX sales fell 2%, but at 9445 sales last month, the RX finished 3050 sales ahead of the BMW X3, 3826 sales ahead of the Lexus NX, and 4165 sales ahead of the Cadillac XT5.

Lexus has reported more than 100,000 RX sales in America in each of the last four years.

GCBC isn’t here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains you’ll see the XC70 listed with luxury cars as well as with SUVs and crossovers and the Touareg with luxury SUVs and mainstream SUVs… because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
