For perspective on the Navigator's rarity, consider its cross-town rival from Cadillac. GM's high-brow Escalade, which was originally brought to market because of the first Navigator's success, outsold the Navigator by six-to-one in March 2016. In fact, the Escalade outsold the Navigator, Lexus LX570, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class – combined – in March.

But March 2016 was an unusual month for Mercedes-Benz's popular three-row luxury SUV. As Mercedes-Benz dealers await the GL's refreshed and renamed 2017 GLS successor, the in-transition GL-Class plunged 82% to 40 units. Typically, Mercedes-Benz Canada sells over 200 GLs every March.

The GL's massive decline brought the category down with it in March. But a look at first-quarter results reveal the current strength of full-size luxury SUVs. Sales of these flagship large luxury SUVs are up 27% in Canada so far this year.

As for the Navigator, a new version is on the way. Previewed by the Navigator Concept at the New York Auto Show in late March, look for Lincoln to make a splash with a more luxurious interior for model year 2018.
