After a one-month hiatus, the Honda Civic was back on top as Canada's best-selling car in March 2016 thanks to a 7% increase to 5943 units.

Hyundai's Elantra, the top-selling car in Canada in February, jumped 33% to 5692 sales. Through the first three months of 2016, the Civic – Canada's best-selling car in 18 consecutive years – is nearly 1000 sales ahead of the Elantra.

Both cars were joined by siblings in the top 20. The Civic's big brother, Honda's Accord, ranked 12th among Canada's best-selling cars, third among midsize cars. The Elantra's little brother, the Accent, ranked 13th overall as Canada's top-selling subcompact car.

Surging up to seventh spot was March's most popular midsize car, the Chevrolet Malibu. Sales of the Malibu, now entering its ninth-generation, grew faster than any other car in the top 20.

But even the gains of the Civic, Elantra, Chevrolet Cruze, Volkswagen Golf, Chevrolet Malibu, and a handful of others were not sufficient to stop Canada's passenger car sector from losing market share. March 2016 was the best March in the history of the Canadian auto industry, but passenger car volume fell 4%.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these best-selling cars can always be accessed through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, and for those not viewing the mobile version of this site, near the top right of this page, as well. GoodCarBadCar has already published the list of Canada's best-selling trucks in March and will shortly publish a list of Canada's most popular SUVs and crossovers.
