Small And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In Canada - November 2013 YTD

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class interior
Canada's Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series-controlled midsize luxury segment has suffered this year from the loss of many Cadillac CTS sales and because of the declines reported by those leading nameplates. And the declines reported by many of their rivals.

November 2013's story was different, however, as the E-Class (and the CLS with which its sales are combined) jumped 60% and 5-Series sales shot up 47%. Even the CTS, long in replacement phase, reversed its downward trend.

Less meaningful gains were reported by the Acura RLX, Audi A6, and Audi A7. Jaguar XF sales rose by 42 units - the XF accounts for 47% of Jaguar's year-to-date sales tally; 60% of Jaguar's November total.

Of course, these are not Canada's top-selling premium brand cars. Less costly cars like the chart-topping BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class lead the way. Lexus's IS outsold the ES and GS combined. For every Infiniti M sold, Infiniti sold 16 Q50s, Q60s, and G sedans. The Volvo S60 was 35 times more popular than the Volvo S80.

After looking for much of 2012 like it would end the year as Canada's top-selling premium brand automobile, the Mercedes-Benz made way for the BMW 3-Series in the final quarter. It's never been in contention in 2013, but the redesigned Mercedes-Benz showed off this week (pictured), the C-Class we'll be able to buy lease later next year, looks like a winner. Or at least the kind of car that will be able to hold onto second spot.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly Canadian auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. These tables are now sortable, so you can rank luxury cars any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you'll see the XC70 listed with luxury SUVs and the Acura ILX with mainstream cars... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
^ Acura combines sales figures of the outgoing RL with the new RLX. Mercedes-Benz's Canadian sales figures combine the E-Class with the CLS-Class.
^ Audi Canada's A4 sales figures include sales of the Allroad
^ Total Infiniti G/Q50/Q60 sales: Up 88.9% to 272 in November; down 0.9% to 2861 YTD. Total G sedan and Q50 sales: Up 115% to 245 in November, up 6.9% to 2373 YTD.

  1. Buick seems to be loosing relevance, at least here where they aren't really Buicks. In China where mileage is more market driven they are still Buicks and doing just fine.

  3. Buick sells more than Acura. It actually is 4th behind BMW, MB, andLexus. It sells more than Audi and Infinity

  4. Have you reviewed how many Buicks sell today compared to 10 years or 15 years ago?

Today, Buick has sold 200,000 Regals in China in the last year. and only managed 70,000 here in the US in the same time period.

In 2004 the Buick La Sabre was celebrating it's 11th straight year as the #1 selling full size car. Now you're comparing them to a faltering Acura?

    How the mighty have fallen.

  5. Different market today compared to a decade or so ago. Acura used to sell allot of cars too but what happened?

Find me a comparison of the Acura ILX winning over the Buick Verano. Yes, wins them all on Autoblog and twice on Motor Trend. Tim provides a comparison good resource here to do your research.

  6. Not different enough to mask that Buick would be as dead as Pontiac or Oldmobile if China wasn't propping up the division.

  7. China sells more cars than NA period.

Buick sells more than say Cadillac it is not propped by China, nor Europe. Maybe they should go.

  8. So government mandates have slowed our car sales and China allows people to buy cars like the large rwd full sized Buick we don't have here.

And Buick is propped up by China, I don't know what kind of moron you are but I just gave you the figures, they sell 20 Regals in China to every 7 here.

Do you have anything to offer other than opinions that ignore all the facts?

  9. The Regal being made in Oshawa makes more than one car on it's flexible line. It makes balancing production levels between two other cars is more important than channel stuffing that old GM would do. Also gives adjustability of three different models as opposed to a single model.

Maybe you should brush up on your portfolio mix than looking at total numbers.
