Small Car Sales Figures In America - May 2013 YTD

As Made Clear In The Top Image,
The 2014 Corolla Can Be Boring, Too.
But The Interior Is A Huge Leap Forward.
Because the Honda Civic is no longer as fun to drive as the four-year-old Honda (with a 4-inch exhaust pipe and flame decals on the hood) journalists bought in the late 90s, auto writers love to look for reasons to crucify Honda. Gasp, Civic sales in May fell 10% on a year-over-year basis. "Honda's gonna die!"

And yet, the Honda Civic, America's best-selling small car in May, outsold its nearest rival, the Toyota Corolla and Matrix, by 2271 units.

There is a problem. Civic sales weren't just down in May, they've fallen three times in the last five months and are off last year's five-month pace by 4.5%. Then again, comparing this year's Civic volume with 2011, rather than the incentive-laden boom of 2012 in which volume jumped 44%, shows Civic sales to be up 17%. Then again, a new Toyota Corolla will be on sale soon. And in current form, with current help from the Matrix, the Corolla is already outselling the Civic on the United States.

Corolla volume slid in May but is up 6% this year. The new Corolla will likely excite Corolla loyalists and should attract other compact buyers who wanted a car with the Corolla's vaunted reliability reputation but couldn't stomach the dreadful dullness. It's hard to imagine the new car will be a thrill ride, but it does equal a sure bet for greater Toyota small car success.

Corolla and Civic sales are shown in the first table below. You'll also see small cars divided up into subcompacts, city cars, five more sportyish hatchbacks, and a mix of crossovers (which are also displayed with small SUVs) and tall hatches like the Kia Soul at the bottom of this post. They're all lumped into one chart which you can click for a larger view. And at any time, y'ought to check out the full listings of year-to-date and monthly sales in which 149 passenger cars and more than 250 vehicles are ranked.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly U.S. sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. These tables are now sortable, so you can rank small cars any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.

* indicates a vehicle which is also shown in another GCBC segment breakdown.
GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you'll see the Encore and XV Crosstrek are listed with small SUVs, too, and the Acura ILX shown with mainstream cars is also displayed with luxury cars... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
