2012 Year End Canada Auto Sales Brand Rankings

In spite of a terrible December in which three of Canada’s four top-selling brands suffered noteworthy sales declines, Canadians purchased or leased 90,000 more new vehicles in 2012 than in 2011.

As usual, Canada’s monthly reporting of auto sales figures began with the Chrysler Group. Dodge, the Chrysler Group’s best-selling brand, was down 4% this year. Chrysler and Fiat generated huge gains.

Ford Motor Company took a big hit in December that was nearly enough to push it into “declined” status for 2012. Ford did, however, set a record in F-Series volume. Three of GM’s four brands sold less often this year than last.

But the suffering in domestic dealers was not felt in most import brand showrooms. Toyota and Honda worked to get back to their old selves, ToMoCo climbing 18% and Honda-Acura rising 21%. Hyunda-Kia was the fourth-largest conglomerate in terms of Canadian volume, finishing only 12,742 sales behind General Motors and 22,025 sales ahead of Toyota-Lexus-Scion.

In all, the majority of brands reached more buyers than they did last year, but it only translated to a 5.7% year-over-year increase in total market size. Only? Canadians are buying vehicles in record numbers, thanks in large part to prices and incentives that make it monthly payments feel like we’re living in the 90s.

You’ll find brands ranked by December 2012 volume here, but this post lists each make by 2012 year end totals. The U.S. version of this post has already been published, and you’ll notice that things are a lot different north of the border. Consider, for instance, the power of Chrysler Canada, the impact of Hyundai and Kia, and the low-profile status of Lexus. Fiat is bigger than Mini here, smart plays a slightly larger role.

There are similarities. Ford is the number one brand. BMW beats a Sprinter-less Mercedes-Benz. Mazda doesn’t sell as many vehicles as it ought to. And most people forget that Jaguar exists.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures, including December and 2012, for every model currently marketed in North America can be accessed through the dropdown menu at GCBC’s Sales Stats home. By the end of the day, three dozen brands will be featured in this important brand rankings post. Ford will sit atop the leaderboard, undoubtedly.

So continue hitting refresh, as we will be updating as soon as automakers release their information. In all, approximately 1.68 million new vehicles were sold in Canada. We must needs know which brands were responsible for the majority of those registrations.
