Small Car Sales, Midsize Car Sales, Large Car Sales In America - November 2011

U.S. small car sales chart November 2011
The Chevrolet HHR is very nearly gone. The Buick Verano is just beginning to arrive. One out of every 249,000 new vehicles sold in America in November 2011 were Veranos. Whether you believe the latest Buick is a competitor for the Acura TSX or the Chevrolet Cruze, the performance of another Buick - the Regal, which you'll find in the second table below - will lead you to believe the Verano won't have a major impact on the market. Its impact will definitely be more noticeable than it was in the latter days of November.

America's most popular small car choice in November 2011 was the Honda Civic, sales of which rose 3%. Civic sales are down 14% this year but remain strong enough to make the Honda America's third-best-selling compact. The Civic trails the Chevrolet Cruze by 14,367 sales and the Toyota Corolla by 18,560, deficits which will not be made up in December.

Apart from the Verano, the only other change in this month's small car sales table is the inclusion of the Mitsubishi i MiEV. We are not close to a time when Mitsubishi could sell i MiEVs in large numbers, but expect to see a number higher than four in December's results.

After the jump you'll find November sales tables and market share charts for midsize and large cars. Monthly and yearly sales figures for all these cars and every other current model on sale can be accessed through the dropdown menu in the top right of this page.

U.S. small SUV sales chart November 2011
General Motors sold 20,590 copies of their Chevy Equinox/GMC Terrain twins in the United States in November.  Sales of both the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain were down from November 2010 levels. Ford sold 21,823 Escapes, up 46% year-over-year. Four Hyundai and Kia alternatives - the Santa Fe, Sorento, Sportage, and Tucson - found 23,117 American buyers in November 2011.

Apart from the defunct Honda Element, no mainstream small SUV or crossover posted a worse drop than the Nissan Juke, sales of which tumbled 26% from its early effort last November. No small utility vehicle reported a greater percentage increase than the Jeep Compass, sales of which multiplied ten times.

After the jump you'll find November sales tables and market share charts for midsize and large SUVs. Monthly and yearly sales figures for all these SUVs and every other current model on sale can be accessed through the dropdown menu in the top right of this page.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The United Kingdom - November 2011

2012 Mercedes-Benz C250 CDI
As per the norm, the Ford Fiesta was the best-selling car in the United Kingdom in November 2011. Fiesta sales were down 4.5% and are off last year's pace by 8% through eleven months. Its lead over its nearest November rival, the Vauxhall Corsa, was nearly 1000 units strong by the end of the month. Year-to-date, the Fiesta's lead over its big brother, the Ford Focus, expanded to nearly 13,000 units.

There are seven brands represented in the UK's 10 best-selling cars list this month. The Honda Jazz and Vauxhall Insignia, two of October's best-selling cars, fell off the list this month. Replacing the Jazz (Fit to you, North America) and Insignia (Buick Regal to you, North America) were BMW's Mini and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. This is the first month this year in which a Mercedes-Benz formed part of the UK best seller list.

With no Volkswagen Passat and no Insignia, no cars from the class North Americans call "midsize" - the D segment in Europe - cracked the top ten in November. Indeed, the two leading candidates are subcompacts. Also present are the similarly sized Volkswagen Polo and bite-size Mini. For the Mini Cooper to be one of America's best-selling cars in November 2011, Mini USA would have needed to more than quadruple the Cooper's monthly total.

Last month's version of this best seller list can be viewed here. Check out America's 20 best-selling cars from November at this link.

Brits acquired 134,027 new vehicles in November 2011, according to SMMT. That's down 4.2% from November 2010. Year-to-date numbers are down 4.5% to 1,822,065. Ford led the way with 18,101 sales last month, but that's down 7.8% from this time last year. With 251,205 sales through eleven months, Ford sales are down 5.7% this year. Ford's November market share, as the chart below shows, was 13.5%, down from 13.7% a month earlier.

The United Kingdom's favourite premium brand was BMW, sales of which fell 5.7% in November. Audi now trails BMW by 1620 sales with one month remaining. Mercedes-Benz is more than 30,000 sales back of Audi.

North Americans aren't accustomed to seeing Mini, a brand known to have niche appeal on this side of the Atlantic, ahead of companies like Honda, Kia, and Hyundai. Moreover, we're not accustomed to seeing Kia with more sales than Hyundai, though that's not the case in the year-to-date standings. Land Rover was Britain's fourth-best-selling premium brand in November. In the United States, Land Rover ranked tenth among luxury automakers in total volume as Land Rover USA barely managed more sales than Land Rover UK despite the fact that the American new vehicle market was 7.4 times the size of the British market. Jaguar-Land Rover market share was 3% in the United Kingdom in November, up from 2.8% in October.

Aside from bit players like Ssangyong and Chrysler, no automaker competing in the UK posted a greater year-over-year gain than Lexus, sales of which jumped 146% in November. Mini sales were up 41.5%. Saab sales plunged 96% in November, Mazda was down 53%, Lotus dropped 51.3%, and Fiat's Abarth division slid 47.7% to just 57 sales. Year-to-date Infiniti sales are up 85.1% - from next to nothing - and Alfa Romeo sales have risen 41.2% compared with January-November 2010. Proton, Ssangyong, Lotus, smart, Mazda, Renault, Subaru, Perodua, and Fiat are all down at least 20% from 2010 sales levels.

Last month's edition of this UK auto sales by brand post can be viewed here. Below you'll find total November 2011 volume, the percentage change from November 2010, and January-November numbers for 43 automobile manufacturers fighting for sales in the stingy UK car market.
