Luxury Auto Market Share In America - July 2011

2011 Lexus CT200h
With 114,572 sales tucked inside the chart you'll peruse below, luxury auto brands competing in the United States owned 10.8% of the overall new car market in July. 47.2% of those luxury brand sales were the result of transactions at German-brand dealerships stocked by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Porsche.

BMW's market share in the luxury segment slid slightly from 19% in June to 18.7% in July 2011 even as year-over-year sales improved at a 12.3% rate. The drop at Mercedes-Benz was worse as the tri-star brand's share of the market fell from 19.8% to 18.1%; this as year-over-year sales jumped 14.9%. Audi's market share dropped from 8.8% to 8% despite a 17% year-over-year boost. Year-over-year, Porsche volume was up 2.4%; market share improved from 2.2% to 2.4% from June to July.

If German brand sales are up and Japanese brand sales are down (Lexus, Acura, Infiniti were down 21.8%, 27.8%, 24.1% respectively), why is the share of the luxury market attributed to those three Japanese brands better in July than it was in June? Quake-related inventory problems were crushing hopes of sales earlier this summer, yet the combined share of the luxury market for Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti rose from 22.5% in June to 27.5% in July. To put it simply, July 2011 was really bad compared with July 2010, but recovery was in sight, something which couldn't really be said in June.

Consider this: the overall new car market was 6325 sales stronger in July than it was in June. Between the three of them, Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti grew their sales by 5589 in the same period, almost accounting for the market's total growth. While that's an ultra-simplification, it reveals how year-over-year figures, though useful, don't tell the whole story. You'd be safe in assuming that Japanese luxury, particularly Toyota luxury, is on its way back up after getting knocked down by a flurry of punches.

Popular Car Market Share In America - July 2011

2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Red
Nearly five out of every 100 vehicles sold in America in July was a Ford F-Series truck. That number sounds really high. F-Series sales, however, were down 2.7% compared with July 2010. Moreover, the Ford's market share in the overall new vehicle market fell from 4.7% in June

On the other hand, stretch a'way back to July 2003 and you'll see that the F-Series' share of the overall new vehicle market in America was... an identical 4.6%. At that time Ford's car division owned just 4.2% of the market. Fortunately for Ford, the car division's share of the overall market reached 5.3% in July 2011.

Looking back to 2003 presents us with some interesting comparisons. At that time the Volkswagen Jetta's market share in America was a difficult-to-locate 0.6%. Fast forward to July 2011 and that number has soared to 1.5%. As a whole, Volkswagen's market share in the first seven months of 2003 was just 1.8%. In the first seven months of 2011, VW's market share in America was 2.5%.

In the chart below you'll see July 2011's 20 best-selling vehicles in America. This includes three pickup trucks, twelve passenger cars, and five utility vehicles from eight different auto manufacturers. Together, these 20 best sellers accounted for 39.2% of all new vehicle sales last month.

New Vehicle Market Share By Brand In The UK - July 2011

2011 Ford S-Max White Front End
The UK's July new car market results was already explored rather deeply earlier this morning, but this chart simplifies matters a great degree. Ford sales were down slightly year-over-year, yes, and it was the best-selling auto brand in the UK, true, but what was the Blue Oval's impact coming from June into July?

Volkswagen's share of the UK car market was 19.6% in June but that market share figure climbed two percentage points in July. General Motors - as represented by Vauxhall and Chevrolet - fell slightly from 13.6% to 13.1%. BMW/Mini fell back from 10% to 8%. PSA's share of the market slid slightly, as did Fiat's, Toyota's, and Renault/Nissan's. Hyundai and Kia moved forward. So did Jaguar/Land Rover. But back on topic, how 'bout Ford?

Up half a percentage point, Ford was in a fine position with 13.9% market share in the UK in July 2011. Nevertheless, it's not hard to see why the Volkswagen Group grabs a greater percentage of all the United Kingdom's new automobile sales. Ford is Ford. That's it. There's no Lincoln, no exoticar company, no valuable Czech subsidiary. As a lone mainstream auto brand, however, no other single entity comes close. Not in the United Kingdom, the United States, or Canada.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The UK - July 2011

2010 Vauxhall Insignia VXR Sports Tourer Black
It would've been a rare occasion had the Ford Fiesta not been the best-selling car in the United Kingdom. Indeed, July 2011 marked no such rare occasion. According to SMMT, Fiesta sales remained level as its year-to-date total rose to 58,338. Ford's own Focus was 460 sales back; 1113 sales ahead of the Fiesta-fighting Vauxhall Corsa.

The UK car market declined 3.5% year-over-year. 33.2% of the UK's 131,634 new vehicle sales are represented in the best-selling cars table you'll see below. The Fiesta and Focus combined to form 70.9% of all Ford UK volume in July. Compare that with Ford in the United States where the same two nameplates made up just 11.7% of Ford's July volume.

Another interesting comparison with the United States involves the number of brands represented in the list of the top 10 best-selling cars. Seven different automakers made their way on in the United States but only five in the United Kingdom. No luxury brand climbed higher in America than the BMW 3-Series in 16th, but in the UK the very same car ranks seventh.

UK Auto Sales By Brand - July 2011

2011 Alfa Romeo Giulietta
Ford sold more cars in the United Kingdom than any other automobile brand in July 2011. Blue Oval sales were in decline, however, and the same was true at Vauxhall, the UK's second-ranked brand. Volkswagen sales were up 8.6%. Scroll through the ranks and you'll arrive at Kia before you see Hyundai. The parent brand has out-sold Kia by 3766 units in the first seven months but Korean victory on the UK belonged to the underling in July.

The overall UK car market declined 3.5% in July, said SMMT's chief, Paul Everitt. Falling car sales Across The Pond have been reflecting artificial volumes from the government's scrappage scheme. July's decline, however, is more easily traced back to a lackluster economy.

BMW was the United Kingdom's best-selling luxury brand in July; Audi remains on top (narrowly) year-to-date. What "luxury" means in a market where an Audi can be had for £13,420 (£2135 less than a basic Ford Focus) I can not say.

The greatest year-over-year gain was reported by Jeep, up 97.2%. Among competitive brands, Audi, Alfa Romeo, and Suzuki were all up at least 30%. Ssangyong went from 10 sales in July 2010 to zero in July 2011. Daihatsu slid 83.3%. Again, among competitive brands, Porsche and Mazda's 45.5% and 44.2% declines were tough to handle. 29 of the 43 brands displayed in the July 2011 edition of GCBC's UK Auto Sales By Brand table below reported lower sales this July than last. The Good Car Guy will cover the UK's Top 10 Best-Selling Cars later today, after which a market share chart examining the overall impact of respective auto conglomerates will be published.

New Vehicle Market Share By Brand In Canada - July 2011

2011 Dodge Journey red
In comparison to June 2011, Ford's level sales and GM's decline allowed Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Fiat to grab a relatively enormous share of the Canadian new vehicle market. Moving up from 14.3% in June to 16.4% in July on the backs of Dodge's Journey and the Jeep brand wasn't that surprising given Chrysler's July achievements. The company reported its best July ever and its 20th consecutive month of year-over-year growth. Hyundai may be in control of the passenger car market, but Chrysler is owning the overall light truck segment.

Despite falling sales, July was kinder to Mazda than June was. The same can't be said for Nissan and Infiniti, but Honda/Acura and Toyota Motor Corp. owned greater market share than they did a month earlier. Volkswagen/Audi/Porsche's gains were slight, from 4.1% in June to 4.3% in July.

Hyundai and Kia... well, you already know the two Koreans were going to make a move. With 12.4% market share in Canada at the beginning of summer, Hyundai and Kia weren't content. Sales at Hyundai, Canada's third-best-selling brand, were up 10.9% compared with July 2010; Kia was up 12.9%. Together, their market share improved to 13.5%, not very far behind General Motors. Not very far at all. At this point last year Hyundai/Kia's market share in Canada was 11.5%. Back then, GM's Canadian market share was 16.1%.

The overall new vehicle market fell 5% compared with the same 31 days of 2010. Any manufacturer reporting gains was doing rather well. This chart, of course, explains what those gains accomplished. Hidden in the 7.2% "other" slice are BMW (up 14.1% year-over-year) with 1.7% market share, Mitsubishi (up 0.6%) with 1.2% of the market, and Audi (up 14.2%) with one out of every hundred new vehicles sold.

GoodCarBadCar.net's July 2011 Canadian market share chart is below. See the U.S. version here.

Canada Auto Sales By Brand - July 2011

2011 Mini Countryman Brown
The Canadian auto market shrunk by nearly 5% in July 2011. Sales of every Japanese automaker declined. A few major domestic brands suffered in contrast with the same period a year ago.

Passenger car sales made up 44.8% of the market last month; "light trucks", including minivans and SUVs, were again the dominant force but were down 3.9% from July 2010. Passenger car sales slid 6.1% according to Desrosiers Automotive Reports. U.S. manufacturers and import nameplates shared equal parts of the Canadian auto market in July. Last year at this time General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler trailed by a couple thousand sales.

Ford was the best-selling brand in Canada and remains the leader through seven months. Sales were a little better than level at the Blue Oval but are up 5.2% year-to-date. Ford's luxury Lincoln division showed improvement in July, as well. General Motors' four remaining brands sold far fewer vehicles than Ford. The Chrysler Group, which includes Dodge, Jeep, and Fiat, was more of a force with which to be reckoned.

Japan's biggest automaker - including its Lexus luxury outpost and Scion underling - was down 18.2%. Inventory woes hit Toyota and the other Japanese manufacturers hard last month. All are expecting August to generate a big turnaround. Toyota Prius sales plunged 76.6% in July.

Fiat, with one lone model, out-sold Infiniti. This also means the Fiat 500 out-sold Cadillac aaaand... Mini.

You'll want to hear about Hyundai and Kia, everybody always does. Together, the two Koreans found 19,136 buyers in Canada in July 2011. 25% of those sales were supplied by the Hyundai Elantra, which we can safely guess was July's best-selling car in Canada. Overall victory will naturally go to the Ford F-Series, 8583 of which were sold in July.

Among car brands, the greatest year-over-year gain in July was Mini's 14.3% jump, aided by the introduction of the Countryman which wasn't a part of the Mini fleet a year ago. No automaker fell harder than Suzuki. More than half the brand's July 2010 sales volume disappeared.

Below, you'll see a table for GoodCarBadCar.net's July 2011 edition of the monthly Canada Auto Sales By Brand post. There are stories relating to Canada's auto sales from July 2010 not explored in the above paragraphs. Keep an eye on the Canadian July 2011 section of GCBC to stay up to date as the month goes on.
