In the race to 60 miles per hour, it seems as though only the inability to get one's vehicle off the line is holding automakers back from racing Top Fuel dragsters. All-wheel drive helps. So does tire technology. And some vehicles are fitted with launch control which perfectly sets the revs and even handles the shifting. Just hold on.
Car & Driver's April issue is filled with remarkably quick cars. Some of them are probably even fun to drive. In comparisons, C/D handed victories to the 911 Turbo (over the ZR1), the BMW 328i convertible (over the Audi A5, Infiniti G, and Lexus IS), and the Mazda 3 (over the Forte and Golf). The three compacts were all fitted with manual transmissions. Each luxury cabrio came to bat with an automatic tranny. And no, not even the Porsche 911 Turbo had a third pedal.
