FUEL ECONOMY IN CAR AND DRIVER FEBRUARY 2010

You know how fast they are, now find out how economical Car & Driver's February test vehicles are. Although fuel efficiency information regarding C/D's Lightning Lap participants has been rendered unavailable, one would understand the nature of a vehicle's fuel economy readings when under such duress wouldn't connect with the real world. Still, those Numbers would have been interesting.

Unsurprisingly, the most fuel efficient car in C/D's February lineup uses a diesel engine. The new TDI version of the sixth-generation Volkswagen Golf is rated as a 30/42mpg car by the EPA. C/D's hard-driving ways, and the result you'll see below, are rather impressive on VW's count.

-----

Volkswagen Golf TDI: 34 miles per gallon
Honda CR-V EX-L *: 24 miles per gallon
Toyota RAV4 Limited *: 24 miles per gallon
Volkswagen Tiguan SE: 24 miles per gallon
Kia Forte Koup SX: 22 miles per gallon
Mercury Mariner V6*: 22 miles per gallon
Mitsubishi Outlander GT S-AWC*: 22 miles per gallon
GMC Terrain SLE: 21 miles per gallon
Subaru Forester 2.5XT Limited*: 21 miles per gallon
Suzuki Grand Vitara V6 Limited*: 20 miles per gallon
BMW M3: 17 miles per gallon (over 40K miles)

* denotes all-wheel drive

  1. now why don't these other manufacturers bring their diesel engines to North America. They all use them in other parts of the world and if VW can do it, why not the others. It seems a better way to go than hybrids as the technology already exists.

  2. To make my Golf return 34mpg I would have to drive all day long in second gear!

  3. I have an MKIII GTI VR6 2.8 and if you drive no more than the speed limit and don't sport around, it will get around 36 UK-MPG (30 US-MPG).

    That's pretty good.

When driving in the winter (below freezing point) or driving sport-style, the car gets between 25 UK-MPG (21 US-MPG) and 31 UK-MPG (26 US-MPG).

    That's also pretty good.

  5. Hey, we told you about Autotrader’s Cliff Your Ride contest a while back and the car has now been cliffed! Check out the carnage on http://cliffyourride.ca. Felix scored himself $ for a new ride for throwing his car off a cliff
